Structured Classrooms, Successful Students: Systems for Independence in Secondary Settings 25-26

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

This workshop is designed for secondary self-contained teachers and paraprofessionals who support students with complex learning and behavioral needs. Participants will learn how to design and implement structured teaching systems that promote independence, reduce anxiety, and increase student engagement.
The session focuses on creating a well-organized physical environment, including intentional classroom layouts with clearly defined areas for instruction, independent work, sensory regulation, and transitions. Participants will explore how structure, consistency, and organization can prevent challenging behaviors and support student success throughout the day.
An additional emphasis will be placed on the use of communication supports and visual cues—such as visual schedules, task systems, first/then boards, and environmental labels—to increase student understanding, predictability, and expressive communication. Practical strategies will be shared to help staff implement these supports consistently across routines and settings.
By the end of the workshop, participants will walk away with ready-to-use ideas, examples, and tools to create structured, supportive classrooms that meet the diverse needs of secondary students with significant disabilities.
This workshop is primarily for Lufkin ISD.
