Faculty advising is vital to student success at South Texas College. This comprehensive training program covers essential advising skills and knowledge, including degree and curriculum requirements, campus resources, advising theories, Degree Works technology, and practical advising scenarios. The training consists of ten sessions, each lasting approximately 1.5 hours, held on Thursday afternoons. By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to confidently advise, mentor, and refer students to appropriate resources. Sessions are conducted live online via Microsoft Teams and are also recorded for later viewing. Participants can earn credit by engaging with the live or recorded sessions. Access to the recorded sessions will remain available until the last day of the current semester. To receive certification, participants must complete 90% of the sessions, which may include a combination of live and recorded attendance. Upon successful completion, participants will be officially certified as 'Faculty Advisors'. Full-time staff members who frequently interact with students are strongly encouraged to participate. Faculty and staff are also encouraged to recertify if more than two years have passed since their last certification, although recertification is not mandatory.

The FOCUS Academy is designed to provide support and structure for faculty working together in professional learning communities. The Academy provides in-depth training on andragogy, contextualized in the teaching and learning environment. For a period of one semester, participants are immersed in an interactive classroom environment to include active learning strategies and technologies around which they enhance their courses based on the principles and techniques they have learned. The delivery of these strategies creates an embedded form of professional development that can be observed by academy participants. The faculty member and his/her peers then engage in reflective dialogue on student learning and corresponding teaching practices. This process creates a community of reflective practitioners who are committed to embracing modern theories of learning to create an engaging classroom experience for all students. COMMON INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORK (CIF) The CIF is an approach to teaching and learning that incorporates six powerful student engagement strategies that require the students to take an active role in their own education. *This is a beginner training for Padlet. Padlet is a great tool to use for collaborative group projects, as it eliminates the need to schedule time in advance for the group members to meet face-to-face. It allows an online notice board to be set up where your students can contribute by pinning their own ideas. This is an ideal online tool for teachers if you are looking to quickly capture students' ideas in one place. Students can add pictures, videos, opinions, links, documents all in one place and they can also see what other people have contributed.
