Integrating Drawing to Foster Writing Development in the Primary Grades

Participants will learn and practice effective writing strategies that encompass a week (5 days) of classroom writing instruction that will provide students and emergent bilinguals with concrete visual means of representing and organizing their thoughts and ideas to develop effective writing skills beyond their primary years. Utilizing a primary writing journal, participants will create a personal narrative that will start with a graphic organizer to select a topic (Monday). Then, they will create a word bank and transitional words and sensory elements (Tuesday). Participants will then incorporate drawing as a mean to represent and organize their thoughts and ideas (particularly effective for emergent bilinguals, novice writers, RTI, and special populations) (Wednesday). After that, participants will write an initial draft utilizing organized thoughts and ideas developed during the week in a very effective, smooth, and organized sequence of events (Thursday). Finally, participants will revise their final writing piece utilizing proper grammar conventions (Friday).
