Teaching and Learning Academy and FOCUS Academy

PURPOSE  
The Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) will provide support, guidance, and training to new faculty. Participants will develop a close-knit support system. Additionally, participants will learn about:
South Texas College’s mission, philosophy, and student population
South Texas College culture, policies, and faculty evaluation process
Effective teaching and active learning strategies and techniques
How to navigate and effectively use Blackboard
Resources available to faculty and their students at South Texas College
BENEFITS
TLA participants will be part of a close-knit community, as they become part of the STC family. During the fall semester, faculty will learn about the STC culture, polices, and assessment processes. They will also become Blackboard certified so that they may teach hybrid courses and web-enhance. In the spring semester, new faculty will be provided with in-depth training on the andragogy and pedagogy, contextualized in the teaching and learning environment. Participants will implement proven instructional strategies learned in the Academy to create an engaging environment and implement effective interactive content  that positively impacts the success of their students. Faculty will also learn to incorporate authentic assessments, employ reflective practices, collaborate with a professional learning community of their peers and integrate technology.
In addition, there will be a Great Teacher’s Seminar held in the Spring Semester for TLA participants. This seminar will give faculty the opportunity to reflect on and to share their experience with their colleagues.
PARTICIPATION
Participation in the Teaching & Learning Academy is required for all new full-time faculty at South Texas College. It will provide faculty with information and resources needed to serve our students effectively.
