Refreshing the Definition of "Ensuring Students Are Learning"

The Guided Pathways Movement, and thus the Texas Pathways Project, is founded on four pillars: (1) clarifying educational pathways for students; (2) helping students chose and enter their path; (3) helping students stay on their path; and (4) ensuring students are learning. Recently, in a joint statement from representatives from the AACU (Association of American Colleges & Universities), the AALHE (Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education), and the NILOA (National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment), and with respect to the fourth pillar in particular, the authors write: "The assessment of student learning in higher education has been headed down an unproductive path for too long." In this session, we will investigate some of the implications of this recent (and potentially seismic) shift in the prevailing culture of learning outcomes assessment.
