2nd Annual Little Changes = Big Result Conference

This conference will help teachers get ideas and tools for working with all students that range from different abilities. We will have a keynote speaker to start us off and then breakout sessions that target: Autism, Gen Ed, Instructional Leadership, MTSS/RTI Designs, and Research Based Interventions for students in all tiers including special education and 504.

Her presentation will not only provide her story, but also aid in assisting educational personnel in learning ways to incorporate inclusion in the classroom for students with disabilities, in order to give them the tools to not only succeed in education, but also in the world.

Presenter: GREGORY HICKEY .... In managing anxiety, approach over avoidance is key. With depression, we know that small changes in our outlook and motivation matter. With anger, we wish our students would pause and reflect before choosing to act. But, how can we apply these concepts in schools? What practical tools do educators have at their disposal that can help students approach what makes them anxious in such a way that it doesn’t overwhelm? What can we do to help kids struggling with depression and anger management? In this session, we’ll explore best practices for helping our students understand and manage their most challenging emotions and, in turn, make more responsible, prosocial choices.

Jean is an experienced physical therapist that is sensory integration certified and has had many years working in schools with special needs and typical classroom settings, infants in an NICU setting, infants, toddlers, and children in an outpatient setting. She will give you an understanding of what sensory integration is, how sensory integration dysfunction can impact your classroom, and why it is important to understand it and address it. Hopefully by the end of the session you will be able to begin to identify basic sensory integration dysfunction and have some strategies to apply to your entire classroom to make the learning environment for all students successful.

Come be a part of the discussion and clear the confusion. Participants will leave with an understanding of the legal definition of 2-E as recognized by the state of Texas, and how 2-E students may present in the classroom. We will examine how this can impact the GT referral and testing process, allowable considerations, and how to meet the needs of these exceptional students in the classroom. 2-E Students: They may be closer than you realize!

We will discuss the Expanded Core Curriculum, the reasons for teaching it, and the requirement to address it in schools. Participants will have the opportunity to gain a new perspective while looking through different vision simulators, learning about O&M services, techniques, and white canes. Low Vision and FM Systems will be discussed, and participants will have hands on experience on how our students who are visually impaired or deaf and hard of hearing access their information through these devices. Participants will look at the devices and how they are used for accessing information at near and distance and how to access information through other channels when one is impaired. Participants will learn how to interact and learn some accommodations for VI or DHH students in their classroom.
