Description: Structured Literacy (SL) approaches are increasingly recognized as the gold standard for teaching struggling readers. This highly practical book walks educators through designing SL interventions for students with common types of reading difficulties--word reading, comprehension, or a combination of both. Louise Spear-Swerling offers tools for assessing students' reading profiles and tailoring SL to their needs. In a convenient large-size format, the volume is packed with case studies, sample lesson plans addressing both early and advanced stages of reading, instructional activities, and application exercises for teachers. A chapter on English language structure presents essential foundations for implementing SL effectively. CSEP day 4 - The best practices in contemporary report writing involve moving away from a test-by-test approach and instead, communicating results to parents and teachers in an integrated theme-based style. According to TEA Guidance, reports should not simply consist of standard scores or definitions of processing skills and scores. This session will demonstrate how to use learning theory, such as the Reading Rope, Simple View of Reading, and Building Blocks, to write reports that explain to parents why their child is struggling with reading and what steps will be taken to address it. The focus will be on clear communication and readability.

The Texas School Safety Center is proud to offer a new curriculum developed in partnership with Safe and Sound Schools and Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) that teaches students and staff their very own age and ability options to school safety during an active event. Based upon Safe and Sound Schools' curriculum and ALERRT's Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE), this curriculum will be offered as a six-hour train-the-trainer session for all regional Education Service Centers (ESC). Due to the sensitive nature of the training, the district’s School Safety and Security Committee will need to approve district staff attending the training. The TX Staying Safe: School Safety Response training is an adapted version of ALERRT’s Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training. This ToT will be a full-day training, with different sessions in the morning and afternoon. Those interested in attending can register through this webpage: https://txssc.txstate.edu/events/staying-safe/

These modules are geared toward experienced elementary, middle, and high school counselors who seek to learn more about collaborating with their counterparts across grade levels to develop a plan to implement a comprehensive K-12 career advising program that provides all students with career exploration opportunities and supports student access to career and technical education. Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs – An Infrastructure for College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) allows school counselors to examine how strong CTE programs can support all students as they prepare for postsecondary success. Participants will explore the components of approved CTE Programs of Study, including coursework, work-based learning opportunities, and industry-based certifications, and understand how these relate to the individual planning components of a comprehensive counseling program. Participants will review the relationship between CTE and programs of study to federal and state legislation (including Perkins V, HB5 - Endorsements, HB3 - Outcomes Bonus Funding, and SB179 - Counseling Duties) and other initiatives. After this module, participants will have a deeper understanding of the value of CTE programs and be better equipped to work with administrators to create the local infrastructure for CCMR driven by data.

During the simulation our participants will role-play one month in poverty and experience low-income families’ lives. This will give you a better understanding of what it is like to live in poverty and currently right above the poverty level. After the simulation, we will discuss your observations, what you have learned, and how we can help our community. By working together and understanding how life can be tougher for some in our community, we can begin to build a stronger support system for our students, friends, and neighbors.

Presenter: Shannon Paige, M. A., CCC-SLP Description: Writing, beyond handwriting, is a complex communication process that is learned and shaped over time. It involves the use of text and allows for improved self-expression, increased independence, and active participation in the community. It is an expected outcome of our current educational system yet many students with disabilities, especially those with complex communication needs, have limited access to writing tools, writing opportunities, and writing expectations. This session will highlight the importance of including access to the letters of the alphabet in combination with other symbol sets when developing communication systems, highlight alternative writing tools, and it will provide simple strategies that can be applied early and across settings to promote long-term writing expectations and writing habits to support communication. 3.0 TSHA CEUs

These modules are geared toward experienced elementary, middle, and high school counselors who seek to learn more about collaborating with their counterparts across grade levels to develop a plan to implement a comprehensive K-12 career advising program that provides all students with career exploration opportunities and supports student access to career and technical education. Effective Advising for Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs will help prepare counselors for their crucial roles in supporting students’ postsecondary success. Participants will identify potential barriers that limit access to CTE programs and review advising strategies and resources to ensure accessible and equitable CTE programs. Participants will review the Perkins V definitions for special populations and explore success outcomes from strong CTE programs, such as college and career readiness, employability skills, and mental health wellness. At the end of this module, participants will recognize potential barriers to accessible and equitable CTE programs and devise plans to eliminate existing barriers.
