The Student Learning Objective (SLO) Model in Texas provides a framework for continuous dialogue between students, teachers and principals to support teacher development and student growth. throughout the year. SLOs drive both teacher practice and student learning by strengthening instruction. The use of SLOs has been associated with improved student outcomes on standardized assessments. Teachers crafting SLOs report improved understanding of how to use data to determine student needs and to measure progress toward goals. SLOs encourage collaboration among teaching peers as well as between teachers and their appraisers. SLOs also encourage the adoption of a long-term vision for student learning and contribute to more meaningful discussions about vertical planning. For teachers, SLOs are often seen as a growth measure that provides specific feedback about which instructional strategies and choices prove effective with particular students. The process prompts deliberate thinking about what decisions a teacher makes and why he or she makes them. They enable teachers, in collaboration with their appraisers, to assess their strengths and weaknesses, such as analyzing data or linking instruction to standards. Those insights then allow for specifically tailored professional development, improvement of instruction, and, ultimately, improved student learning.

Dr. Georgeanne Warnock, parent, presenter, and Superintendent of Schools for Terrell ISD since January of 2020. Dr. Warnock holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and English from Trinity University, a Master's of Education in Secondary Education from the University of North Texas, a Master of Education in Education Administration from the University of North Texas, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of North Texas. Prior to becoming Superintendent, Dr. Warnock served as Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Associate Superintendent of Educational Services for seven years. She also held positions as high school principal, high school associate principal, and high school English and Social Studies teacher. Dr. Warnock is married to Matt Warnock, who serves as Director of Recruitment and Retention. They are the proud parents of four sons: Connor, Mitchell, Matthew, and Caden. A bit of what to expect in her presentation of “What it Takes to Lead a School”… “One of our littlest Tigers lost a shoe at last night’s Meet the Teacher Night. The PreK Principal sent me a picture of this tiny shoe as a reminder of the precious feet that will walk through the doors of our schools tomorrow as we begin a new year. So, I had to make a comparison to my youngest son’s shoe…he’ll start his sophomore year tomorrow. From size 2 to 12, they are all precious feet that will step into our hallways tomorrow with excitement, trepidation, joy, anxiety, & a need for connection and belonging. The feet that will walk our halls tomorrow are connected to big feelings, big hopes, and big dreams. New shoes make us feel some kind of way—optimistic, shiny, peppy. New shoes mean we are growing, and sometimes new shoes pinch and hurt as we break them in…they have to adjust to us and we have to get to know them. But, that little bit of pain is good as it means we are adjusting to the new. Praying for all of the feet who will be walking through the doors of our schools tomorrow—student feet, parent feet, teacher feet, staff feet…and the hearts & minds attached to them!??”

Presenter: Joel Shaul, LCSW Description: All professionals working with school-age children on speech and social-emotional concerns learn that there is much common ground between the domains of speech, mental health, and teaching. The presenter, an autism specialist who has closely studied speech-based approaches to helping children on the spectrum, will first review some mental health approaches that have the potential to be incorporated into school-based speech interventions. We will then examine practical mental health and social skills tools and strategies to address problems such as anxiety, anger, challenging social situations, and social isolation. The presentation includes access to several free downloads of games, worksheets, and other tools from the presenter’s website. The strategies presented are designed for verbal, motivated school-age children. Presenter: Marilyn J. Monteiro, Ph.D Description: School-based speech and language pathologists increasingly face the challenge of recognizing the full range of autism spectrum differences and engaging students in productive diagnostic interviews. Participants in this workshop will learn to engage children and adolescents in sensory-based interviews using the MIGDAS-2 diagnostic interview system to obtain meaningful and distinctive qualitative communication samples to better identify the autism spectrum language profile. The session will highlight the use of the MIGDAS-2 visual framework and strength-based descriptive language to individualize the diagnosis of autism spectrum differences across age and ability levels in the school setting. Integrating the use of this qualitative set of protocols with autism-specific standardized communication measures will be discussed, along with outlining how the MIGDAS-2 strength-based process aligns with the IDEA special education eligibility guidelines for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Topics include gaining proficiency in structuring the sensory-based diagnostic interview using the Descriptive Triangle positive language, defining the role of the SLP on multidisciplinary autism assessment teams, differential diagnosis considerations, and discussing the diagnosis with parents. 2.5 TSHA CEUs
