Building Relationships: Using Cultural Wealth with Clients Facing Social Stigma

Sponsored by River Crest Hospital, presented by Lori Hollingsworth, MEd, LPC-S, CSC, Certified EMDR Therapist. World Mental Health Day celebrated in October, is a global initiative to raise awareness and advocate against social stigma. In an era where natural disasters, political transitions, COVID-19, immigration, and racial tensions are at an all-time high, it is crucial for counselors to build relationships with their clients. In this presentation, participants will learn to integrate cultural wealth, a postmodern theory, to build connections with clients. According to Yosso (2005), there are six forms of capital, the clients' and communities' assets and strengths. These assets will be explored while considering the social stigmas that clients endure. Audience participation will be encouraged through activities of the sand tray and case studies. Handouts will be available.
