EMPOWERING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

This interactive workshop will provide Family & Consumer Sciences educators with strategies and resources for increasing community engagement and addressing relevant issues impacting students and families. Participants will learn how to identify needs within their school and local community and develop responsive projects that leverage the information learned in FCS courses. Workshop highlights include: 1) Exploring ways to partner with community organizations, agencies, and stakeholders to bring awareness to FCS topics; 2) Developing meaningful service learning projects tied to FCS course curriculum; 3) Using data to identify priority issues affecting students and families; 4) Creating empowering lessons and activities that allow students to make an impact on community problems; 5) Engaging families and community members by sharing FCS program outcomes and student work; 6) Building supportive relationships with community leaders and partners; and 7) Utilizing community engagement to increase visibility and advocate for FCS. This interactive workshop provides FCS teachers with tangible tools to strengthen community ties, address relevant real-world issues, and empower students to create positive change within their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Participants will leave motivated and equipped to integrate impactful community engagement strategies into their FCS instruction and programs.
