Connecting Communication and instruction for students

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

Communication is more than words—it’s how students express needs, choices, emotions, and understanding. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the foundations of communication and why explicitly teaching communication skills is essential for student success. We’ll examine the powerful connection between communication and behavior and how challenging behaviors often stem from unmet communication needs.

Participants will review key considerations when developing or selecting communication systems and investigate a variety of student response modes, including gestures, visuals, AAC, and alternative forms of expression. The session will also provide practical, classroom-ready strategies for teaching communication skills across daily routines and instructional activities.

By the end of this workshop, educators will walk away with a deeper understanding of how to intentionally embed communication into instruction—helping students communicate more effectively, reduce frustration, and increase meaningful participation throughout the school day.
