Designing for Independence: Organizing Functional Academic Classrooms

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

An organized classroom is essential for effective instruction in functional academic settings. This in-person Make & Take training focuses on intentionally designing and organizing special education classrooms to build routines, instruction, and independence into the environment.

Participants will learn how to break their classroom into purposeful instructional areas and understand how organization impacts student engagement, behavior, and learning. Teachers will create visual labels and organizational supports and develop a classroom layout plan to support whole-group instruction, small-group teaching, independent work systems, and play or leisure areas. Practical strategies shared can be implemented immediately and sustained throughout the school year.

Participants will:

Organize a functional academic classroom by instructional purpose

Identify essential classroom areas that support student learning

Create visual labels and organizational supports

Develop a classroom layout plan that promotes independence
