Literacy as Sanctuary: Building Trauma-Informed Spaces through Reading, Writing and Voice (Grades 6-12)

Complete Attendance not available before workshop starts.

In today’s classrooms, literacy can be more than an academic pursuit. It can be a powerful pathway to connection, belonging, and emotional well-being. In this collaborative session led by an RLA specialist and a mental health specialist, participants will explore how trauma-informed practices can be woven into everyday literacy instruction. Through reading, writing, speaking, and listening, teachers will discover ways to create classroom environments where students feel safe to express themselves, build confidence in their voices, and engage meaningfully with texts and ideas. Participants will examine strategies that support reading as a regulating practice, writing as a space for reflection and identity development, and structured discussion that helps students overcome anxiety and share their thinking with others. Leave with practical classroom approaches that strengthen both literacy development and student well-being while maintaining a strong focus on meaningful instruction.
