The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) created a shift by including standards-based instructional strategies for all. What does that mean? The law encourages our schools to create an environment for all students to demonstrate growth and challenges us as we plan for differentiated instruction and assessments. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework that is designed to guide teachers in setting up their methods of delivery, physical spaces, technology, personal interactions, and lesson plans. This design very simply weaves together best practices of inclusion and positive behavioral interventions and support (PBIS) by providing greater accessibility for all students, including students with disabilities.
