Moving Beyond PIE: Author's Purpose and Craft in the Primary Grades

Analyzing the author's purpose and craft is more than just PIE (persuade, inform, entertain). The standards require students to move beyond the surface and use critical inquiry to analyze authors' choices and how they influence and communicate meaning within a variety of texts. In this session, you will gain a deep understanding of student expectations related to the author's purpose and craft and distinguish between surface-level activities and activities that support the critical analysis of these expectations.
