Picture Books in the Social Studies Classroom

Picture books bring tremendous benefits to young learners as an introduction to their community and the world around them. Illustrations shown alongside text allow students to relate to the characters and setting portrayed. When characters in the books include different characteristics, races, and cultures, students can see themselves in the text and make connections to new learning. Students of all ages enjoy picture books in the social studies classroom.
