Bring computer science and computational thinking to your elementary classroom with Launch_K5, a 3-day hybrid workshop for K-5 educators. This training aligns with the new Tech Apps TEKS for the 2024-2025 school year and integrates computational thinking, computer science, cyber security, and AI into your curriculum. You’ll receive both unplugged and plugged lessons and learn block-based coding and physical computing. Participants MUST attend all three days (2 in-person, 1 asynchronous) to receive credit. Day 1 covers foundational concepts. Day 2 training is split into grade bands; K-2 (June 3) and 3-5 (June 4). You will be registered for the appropriate grade band training once you have completed Day 1. The online course can be completed at your convenience after Day 2 but MUST be completed by August 31. Upon completion, you’ll receive a CPE certificate from the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin. You will NOT receive workshop credit from Region 7 ESC for this training. K-2 educators will receive 2 VEX robots, and 3-5 educators will receive 10 Micro:bit kits. The Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology introduces schoolteachers to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math connections of wireless technologies. The TI program is filled with lectures, hands-on activities, and demonstrations to inspire teachers to inspire their students by using tools and strategies to introduce basic electronics, radio science, satellite communications, Amateur Radio, and electronic sensors to their students. The goal of TI-1 is to introduce teachers to the basics of electronic principles, radio frequency propagation, and antennas. Teachers will gain knowledge through classroom instruction and apply the knowledge in various hands-on experiences, including circuit building, antenna building, soldering, and fox hunting. Teachers will return to their classrooms with equipment to implement in their instruction, including a handheld directional antenna and a Software Defined Radio. Amateur Radio licensed teachers will also receive a Fox transmitter and two HT radios. There are license testing opportunities during this program.
