Provision of services for students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment (LRE) is a critical component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The decisions regarding the educational placement, including participation in nonacademic and extracurricular activities, of each student with a disability must be based on the individualized needs of each student as determined and documented through the individual educational plan (IEP) process. The purpose of this training is to re-emphasize that IEP teams must adhere to all legal requirements related to placement in the LRE. Other considerations that when determining the most appropriate placement for a student with a disability will also be addressed

There also must be evidence that the student was invited to the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meeting where transition services are to be discussed and evidence that, if appropriate, a representative of any participating agency that is likely to be responsible for providing or paying for transition services was invited to the ARD meeting with the prior consent of the parent or student who has reached the age of majority. Communication may be our life’s work, but difficult conversations are still DIFFICULT! With other tasks and stressors vying for our limited time and resources, it is easy to put off having a difficult conversation in the hopes that the problem will go away. Unfortunately, the longer we avoid hard conversations, the larger the problem becomes. This presentation will provide a solution-oriented, step-by-step approach to starting and managing difficult conversations. Imagine a workplace with less stress, increased trust, and better outcomes for everyone. You’ve got this! Most of what has been written about AAC assessment focuses on the selection of AAC apps, software, and devices. While it is essential to do those evaluations well, these types of assessments happen quite infrequently. The need for increased stakeholder involvement in planning the assessments will be discussed along with the development of Fair Testing Practices, which can be used as a blueprint for testing in clinical and academic settings. The use of language sampling and considerations in data logging will be addressed. Participants will also gain insight into strategies for observational assessments, formal testing, and the use of informal protocols. The session will conclude with a discussion on interpreting, disseminating, and utilizing assessment result.
