Assistive technology (AT) is more than just devices—it’s about unlocking access, independence, and opportunity for students with disabilities. Yet, confusion and misinformation often get in the way of effective implementation. In this engaging and practical session, classroom teachers will explore common myths about assistive technology and learn the truth about what AT is—and isn’t. Participants will walk through the legal requirements for considering AT in the IEP process and discover tools to guide collaborative team discussions. Special attention will be given to how AT decisions are documented in the IEP, including present levels, accommodations, goals, and services. Whether you're new to assistive technology or looking to strengthen your practices, this session will leave you better equipped to advocate for and support the unique needs of your students through accurate and meaningful IEP documentation. #ATESC1, #LIDESC1

Paraprofessionals play a key role in helping students access learning—and assistive technology (AT) is one of the most powerful tools available to support that success. But what counts as AT? Who decides what’s used? And how can you help students without doing the work for them? In this session, paraprofessionals will explore and debunk common myths about assistive technology, learn the basics of what AT includes, and understand how it supports student independence. Participants will also learn how to recognize when AT is part of a student’s IEP, and how to use it as intended in the classroom, without over-supporting or stepping beyond their role. This session is about building confidence, clarity, and practical strategies for supporting students with AT the right way—so they can learn, grow, and thrive. Participants will leave with: * A clear understanding of what assistive technology is (and what it isn’t) * Tips for recognizing when and how to use AT as part of a student’s IEP * Strategies for supporting student independence with AT * Guidance on working with the teacher and specialists to support AT use in real time #ATESC1, #LIDESC1

Paraprofessionals play a vital role in supporting students with disabilities—but how close is too close? This session explores the important findings from the article Helping or Hovering? Effects of Instructional Assistant Proximity on Students with Disabilities, shedding light on how physical proximity can impact student independence, peer interactions, and learning outcomes. Participants will engage in interactive scenarios and reflection activities to identify when support empowers—and when it unintentionally hinders—a student’s growth. Learn practical strategies to foster independence, encourage peer engagement, and collaborate more effectively with teachers to promote a least-restrictive learning environment. Presenter: Shannon Paige, M. A., CCC-SLP Description: Writing, beyond handwriting, is a complex communication process that is learned and shaped over time. It involves the use of text and allows for improved self-expression, increased independence, and active participation in the community. It is an expected outcome of our current educational system yet many students with disabilities, especially those with complex communication needs, have limited access to writing tools, writing opportunities, and writing expectations. This session will highlight the importance of including access to the letters of the alphabet in combination with other symbol sets when developing communication systems, highlight alternative writing tools, and it will provide simple strategies that can be applied early and across settings to promote long-term writing expectations and writing habits to support communication. *3.0 TSHA CEUs will be awarded- *REGISTRATION FOR THIS WEBINAR CLOSES THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE WEBINAR AT 5:00PM. The Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum-Second Edition (MIGDAS-2) is a qualitative interview process that helps evaluators individualize the diagnostic process for children, adolescents, and adults. Through systematic interviews with parents, caregivers, teachers and the individuals being evaluated, a narrative description of the autism brain system differences is developed. This session will give participants tools to conduct a sensory-based diagnostic interview with individuals whose communication skills range from verbally fluent to functionally nonverbal using the MIGDAS-2 system and protocols. Participants will learn how to describe individuals in positive and descriptive terms rather than deficit based terminology commonly used in special education evaluations. This session is appropriate for School Psychologist. This training is of no charge for LEA staff within Region One. You must register using your LEA district email to avoid being dropped.
