Spelling is an essential skill for primary school children to learn. Not only does it help them become better readers and writers, but it also boosts their confidence, expands their vocabulary, and helps them develop concentration skills. Research shows that learning to spell and learning to read rely on much of the same underlying knowledge. Learn more about the relationships between letters and sounds and how a proper understanding of spelling mechanics can lead to improved reading.

Texas has continued developing guidance with the implementation of the Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS). MTSS, if done with fidelity and using evidence-based interventions, can provide useful data about the level of support a student needs. This workshop will target three specific modules developed by the state network TIER: a) the Universal Screener, (b) Progress Monitoring, and (c) Data-Driven Decision Making. These critical components of a three-tiered framework provided the evidence needed to determine if the student is responding positively and closing the gap between their performance and their same-aged peers. We will also review Senate Bill 1153 and how we document what interventions and supports students receive to determine if they are responding academically and behaviorally.

Reading comprehension is the bi-product of decoding and language comprehension. If students cannot access the print from the page through the act of decoding, they will have limited to no comprehension of the text. This workshop will focus on providing participants with the background of phonics instruction, beginning with the alphabetic principle and extending along the continuum through advanced phonics, including morphology. Reading comprehension is the bi-product of decoding and language comprehension. If students cannot access the print from the page of complex texts through the act of decoding, they will have limited to no comprehension of the text. As teachers in grades 6-8 focus on equipping students with the skills to enable them to make meaning from complex texts, there is also a need to equip teachers with the knowledge and application of foundational skills to enable students the ability to decode words, including multisyllabic words and polysemic words to enhance meaning making of texts. This workshop provides educators with a comprehensive understanding of text complexity and its role in literacy instruction. Participants will explore the three dimensions of text complexity: quantitative measures (e.g., Lexile levels), qualitative factors (e.g., text structure, language clarity, and knowledge demands), and reader and task considerations (e.g., student background and instructional purpose). Through interactive activities, educators will learn how to evaluate texts, match them to student needs, and plan effective instruction that builds comprehension and critical thinking.

Reading comprehension is the bi-product of decoding and language comprehension. If students cannot access the print from the page through the act of decoding, they will have limited to no comprehension of the text. This workshop will focus on providing participants with the background of phonics instruction for the upper and middle school student. There will be an emphasis on the connection to the basics of phonics and extend along the continuum through morphology. The understanding of the content and knowledge of evidence based practices will equip teachers with the skills to help facilitate student to "crack the code" for reading increasingly complex texts.

Comprehension skills, such as analyzing, inferring, questioning, and synthesizing information, enable students to delve deeper into the content. In return, the more content knowledge students acquire, the more background knowledge they have for understanding new information. It’s a reinforcing cycle where skills and knowledge continually enhance each other. We will spend the day sharing skills and strategies to grow good readers-----their comprehension will be strengthened by existing and new knowledge.

We have taught ECRs for two years. Across the state, in my district, or in my classroom, where are students struggling? What do these struggles mean for instruction, and what do I do next to help my student writers? Simplifying the ECR process involves finding the balance between meeting rubric expectations and managing time effectively. By breaking down requirements, providing examples, and promoting efficient strategies, we empower students to tackle ECR writing confidently.

Educational technology serves as a powerful catalyst in classrooms by breaking down barriers and creating equitable learning opportunities for all students. Through strategic implementation of digital tools, schools can enhance their themed instruction while personalizing learning experiences to meet diverse student needs. Technology enables real-time differentiation through adaptive platforms, provides access to industry-standard software, and facilitates virtual field trips that might otherwise be impossible. For STEAM-focused programs, technology offers advanced simulation software and coding platforms, while arts-centered classrooms can leverage digital creation tools and virtual museums. Universal Design for Learning principles, implemented through thoughtful tech integration, ensure that all students can access and engage with content regardless of their learning style or needs. Global collaboration tools connect students with experts and peers worldwide, expanding cultural understanding and real-world relevance. Digital portfolios and progress-tracking systems help students demonstrate growth and competency in theme-specific areas while providing valuable data for teachers to adjust instruction. When properly implemented, educational technology not only supports specialized curricula but also prepares students for future success by developing digital literacy and 21st-century skills essential in our increasingly connected world.
